How is the story ironic and the pardoner’s relationship to the story ironic?

The irony lies in the deception the rioters take against each other resulting in the death of all of them. It would seem "death" himself had his way with these guys while they hunted him. The Pardoner uses deception as a way of life yet he pardons sins for a living and tells this story!
