The written word awakes something profound in Liesel. It's like before reading she saw in black and white and after she saw in colour. Liesel is able to communicate her fear, hopes, angst and terror in ways she never thought possible. Liesel is able to tap into other people's experiences to help her survive the hell that was Nazi Germany. Books also serve as a sort of communion between different characters. Max and Liesel form a strong bond through the written word, as do Liesel and Hans.
