the narrator says that World War 2 was the result of the Germans' love of burning things. What tells you that this statement should not be taken literally, at face value?

Well, burning things was only part of the process of greater evils. Burning things was a means of "purifying" all that they felt polluted the German people. This hideous practice included books, art and sadly even people (Jews).
