There are so many great quotes which allude to your query. I've picked out a few,

"The last time I saw her was red. The sky was like soup, boiling and stirring. In some places it was burned. There were black crumbs and pepper, streaked across the redness." The sky over Himmel street after bombing.

"Then she snatched a book from beneath a steaming pile of ashes, Liesel was a girl made of darkness." This is a creation destruction thing. Liesel has declared a personal war on Hitler. She is, in a sense, reborn to destroy an evil man.

"I witness the ones that are left behind, crumbled among the jigsaw puzzles of realization, despair, and surprise. They have punctured hearts. They have beaten lungs." Even Death sees living with the destruction of loved ones is harder than dying.

"Still in disbelief, she started to dig. He couldn't be dead. He couldn't be dead. He couldn't ..." Liesel's brother dies.

"You are going to die." Death points out the one thing we all have in common.
