how do the words and symoles that sprout from these trees relate to the political situation in Hitler's Germany?

soon, the demand for the lovey ugly words and symbols increased to such a point that the forests grew. many people were needed to maintain them. some were employed to climb to the trees and throw the words down to those below. they were then fed directly into the remainder of the Fuhrer's people, not to mention who cmae back for more.

I think that Zusak is using the metaphor of the trees to personify that hate and the culture of hate needs to be cultivated. Just like love, the seeds of hate need to be care for and fed with hate to result in the type of garden embraced by the Nazis.
