I think this causes a lot of added stress. Several of the characters are sent to the Eastern Front. Hans and Rosa Hubermann’s son, Hansi was sent along with Frau Holtzapfel’s sons, Michael and Robert. This didn't just affect the boys/young men going to the front but all the families and the German population. 30 million men were lost as a result of the German invasion. It was considered an important factor in Germany losing the war.
