The Book Thief

Discuss Death’s narrative voice. Is there anything surprising about the way the author characterizes Death? What do you observe about the way Death presents Liesel’s story?

A metaphysical being, Death serves as the dryly cynical narrator of The Book Thief. At times he seems like a curious child and at others he sounds like a pessimistic public servant that is jaded by the paradox of humanity. Even thoug Death remains fairly objective, he seems to have a soft spot for Liesel. Death even retrieves the actual written autobiography of Liesel's life after the air raid at the end of the novel.
