Part of the point of the story covers this argumentative question. The idea focused on is whether you want to live a long, but truly not free life, or if you would like to simply die and be done with it. The question of morality focuses on what we think is truly moral and the reality is that as humans we never act in a truly moral fashion. However, it does seem more humane to end a life and put an end to suffering than to punish someone over and over and over again for one crime.

The death penalty is more moral and more humane than imprisonment for life. Capital punishment kills a man at once, but lifelong imprisonment kills him slowly. Which executioner is the more humane, he who kills you in a few minutes or he who drags the life out of you in the course of many years?" (1.2)
