What theme(s) in the novel of "The Bean Trees" do Taylor's stories about Scotty and "nutters" relate to?

I think it touches on the theme of belonging, of feeling wanted by others. Taylor mentions the Nutters when she went to school. They earned money by picking walnuts and had each other. Scotty was an outcast and didn't belong to anyone.
