What is the significance of “White rocks sloped up out of the water like giant, friendly hippo butts.” in relation to the plot?

Kingsolver has a background in natural history which she uses to establish the simplicity of life and its enjoyment. I always though that this quote might relate to the simplicity of Turtle who enjoyed life in the simple moment.
