Leonce dotes on his wife, but her inattentiveness to their children annoys him. He sees her as lacking in motherly instinct, but we're also given to believe Leonce is a bit of a nagger. He too lacks consideration, spending a lot of time away from home and remembering the inessential was not his forte.
