What obstacles did Franklin (and the ship passengers) have to overcome in order to get to Philadelphia?

Franklin talks a lot about wind. Because of the headwinds, they did not get out of the English coast twenty days. At times they ran low on supplies, a steward was whipped for using too much flour in puddings. They hit mud bogs and weeds along the way. There were a few stormy days.
