is the narrators decision to return to the United States from europe motivated by "a desire to help those i consider my people," or by "a desire to distinguish myself"?

I think that, at this point in the story, the narrator is re-evaluating his place in racial identity. I think he is beginning to lean towards exploring his own people. He could have followed the Millionaire to Egypt but chose to return to the American South.
