What is coelho doing by having Santiago experience his vision in the desert , and not in the oasis?

Things are seldom what they seem to be. This is one of the larger themes in the book. Revelations can come to people in even the most unlikely of places. The desert is supposed to be a place of stifling heat and stagnant dusty air yet destiny reveals itself when Santiago is most uncertain.
