The Alchemist (Coelho)

Author Paulo Coelho says that the biggest obstacle most people face in pursuing their Personal Legend is, “the fear of realizing the dream for which we fought all our lives.” (viii). How does this explain the Crystal Merchant’s failure to travel to Mecca?

The Crystal Merchant says that, "The fifth obligation of every Muslim is a pilgrimage. We are obliged, at least once in our lives, to visit the holy city of Mecca." Now that he can leave his shop the merchant says he is scared to pursue his personal legend because he might be disappointed. Santiago does not fear the same things as the merchant. The merchant feels the tragedy of getting what he wants out of life. He fears, he will be disappointed thus losing his previous business as well as his dream. Santiago feels compelled to go. Santiago must follow his quest; it is his destiny regardless of the outcome. .
