What was the "boom" the pirates kept hearing, and why did it make them feel unhappy?

The "boom" was the shot of a cannon over the water. The boys were unhappy because the sound of the cannon meant the townspeople suspected someone had drown..... and in this case, it was Tom and his pirates.
