Chapter 18's shift in perspective, from the boys the island to the villagers in St. Petersburg, creates dramatic irony because it illustrates the vast difference in emotions from the villagers to Tom and the other boys. The villagers are overcome with grief in mourning the loss of the boys. The boys, in turn, rejoicing over the way they are being mourned.
