What purpose does this chapter serve?

This chapter provides insight into Jim's character. Huck is learning that Jim is a sincere and trustworthy man, although he is also stubborn and mature. Loyalty is being tested between the two characters; they're feeling each other out, and the things they're figuring out are assisting them in making important decisions.
