In literature, a foil is a character that shows qualities that are in contrast with the qualities of another character with the objective to highlight the traits of the other character.
Buck and Huck (similar names) are about the same age, but that's about where the similarities end. Huck has no mother, and his father is a drunk; Buck's family has money, and they're looked up to as aristocrats. Unfortunately, the Grangerfords don't live up to their "noble" standing in the community. They feud for no reason, murder thoughtlessly, and prove that social status isn't everything. In the end, Buck is killed as a result of an argument no one can remember anymore.
