When the pH of the blood is lowered by a higher rate of metabolism or low oxygen increases BPG levels, hemoglobin will release more oxygen. Fetal hemoglobin facilitates placental oxygen transport because it has adapted to have higher affinity for oxygen, facilitating transport to the offspring in large enough quantities for development.
