The germ cell lineage begins with the germ cell plasm confined to one part of the egg. Due to cleavage, the germ cell plasm becomes enclosed within the vegetal hemisphere and the descendants of these cells will eventually move to matured gonads. One hypothesis of the germ cell plasm is that they include inhibitors of peptide synthesis that prevent these cells from differentiating into anything that are not germ cells.
