Chapter 39 - Physiology, Homeostasis, and Temperature Regulation - 39.4 - Body Temperature Depends on the Balance between Heat In and Heat Out of the Body - 39.4 Recap - Learning Outcomes - Page 836: 1

Answer

Figure 40.10 demonstrates the main differences between the body temperatures of ectotherms and temperatures of endotherms. While an ectotherm allows the environment to dictate its body temperature, an endotherm regulates its body temperature in spite of the temperature of the environment. This allows the warm-blooded animal to remain physiologically active in a broader range of temperatures at the expense of more energy.
