A 5′ cap of specialized guanosine triphosphate (GTP) is added to the 5′ end of the pre-mRNA during transcription. This cap facilitates the binding of the mRNA molecule to the ribosome for translation and protects it from ribonucleases that would otherwise degrade the mRNA. A 3' poly A tail is added at the end of transcription, effectively acting as a signal to cut the pre-mRNA. This also facilitates transport through the cytoplasm.
