Chapter 5 - Section 5.5 - Two Cardiovascular Pathways - Check Your Progress - Page 104: 2

Answer

Blood flows from the heart to the digestive tract. The blood absorbs glucose, amino acids, and other nutrients in the small intestine before it travels to the capillary beds of the liver. The liver stores the glucose in the blood as glycogen and either stores the amino acids or uses them immediately to form blood proteins. The liver also purifies the blood of toxins. After leaving the liver, the blood flows through the heptic vein back to the inferior vena cava and back to the heart.
