Rocks are reservoirs in the phosphorus cycle. This mineral moves through rock water, soil and sediment -- beds of rivers and bottom of oceans. Inorganic phosphorus is taken up by plants which are eaten by animals. In living things inorganic phosphorus are converted to organic phosphorus. When living organisms die and decay, inorganic phosphorus is deposited in the soil. Phosphorus is an essential nutrient, especially in the ATP energy economy of plants and animals.
