Chapter 20 - Section 20.4 - Treatment of Cancer - Check Your Progress - Page 450: 4

Answer

Angiogenesis is the production and proliferation of blood vessels ( especially capillary networks). As tumors grow, the new tissues formed constantly threaten to outstrip the available vasculation and blood support. Tumors promote angiogenesis to ensure adequate supplies of nutrients and oxygen, as well as to guarantee timely removal of metabolic wastes and carbon dioxide.

Work Step by Step

Anti-angiogenic drugs break up angiogenic capillary networks associated with tumors. Some examples of anti-angiogenic drugs are angiostatin and endostatin.
