p53 gene therapy protects against cancer development in two ways: 1. It promotes the repair of repairable genetic damage in a cell 2. It triggers apopotosis (programmed cell death) in cases of hopeless genetic damage so that the damaged cells will not multiply and increase the number of damaged (cancerous) cells. This halts the spread of cancer.
