Work Step by Step

The uterine tubes are also called the oviducts or Fallopian tubes. Each tube extends from one arm of the uterus to the ovary on that side. Oviducts receive and conduct the discharged ovum to the uterus and fertilization usually takes place in a uterine tube. The ovary is the female gonad. It produces female gametes (ova). After an ovum is fertilized by a sperm, the resulting zygote goes through many mitotic divisions to become a blastocyst which eventually implants in the uterus. The uterus is also called the womb. In this structure the embryo/fetus is housed and nourished until the time of parturition. The glans clitoris is the female homolog of the male glans penis. It is the female organ of sexual arousal. Internally, the clitoris also has a body, crura and vestibular bulbs The labia minora( sing. labium minus) are thin cutaneous folds which are part of the vulva. They surround and protect the clitoris , the uretral exit, and the vaginal orifice. The labia majora ( sing, labium majus) are the large lips of the vulva-- situated outside the labia minora. Each consists of a fold of skin and underlying adipose tissue. They cover and protect the labia minora, the clitoris, the urinary opening, and the vaginal orifice. The labia majora are the female homologs of the male scrotal sacs The vaginal orifice is the opening of the vagina -- the birth canal. This vaginal canal leads from the orifice upward to the inferior/distal end of the uterus. The cervix is a structure at the lower end of the uterus-- located where the latter enters the upper vagina. The cervical opening connects vaginal canal and uterus. The vagina is the a tube that runs at an angle between the lower/distal uterus and the vulva. The distal opening of this structure is called the vaginal orifice Three important functions are served by the vagina; it is the female organ that receives the penis during sexual intercourse, it is the birth canal, and it permits the passage the menstrual flow to the exterior.
