Insulating coats are laid over nerve fibers in CNS as well as in the CNS. In both cases this function is carried out by supporting cells of the nervous system --neuroglia. In the CNS the melinating neuroglia are called oligodendrocytes. In the peripheral nervous system (PNS), the myelinating cells are called Schwann cells or neurilemma.
