Chapter 12 - Engage - Page 259: 5

Answer

5. The player who sustained the fracture will heal faster and be able to return to play earlier.

Work Step by Step

Bone cells reproduce faster than cartilage cells and connective tissue cells in structures like ligaments.. The repair of the fibular fracture entails multiplication of bone cells (osteoblasts), and this is a comparatively fast process. A sprain/strain of tendons or ligaments means the stretching and rupture of collagen fibers. The multiplication of fibroblasts is a slow process; consequently, the repair and replacement of collagen and elastic fibers is slower than with osteogenesis.
