Chapter 32, Skeletal, Muscular, and Integumentary Systems - Assessment - 32.2 The Muscular System - Understand Key Concepts - Page 942: 15

Answer

Skeletal muscles are generally under voluntary control. They are responsible for the movement of bones that are attached to them. Smooth muscle is mainly involuntary. This type of muscle lines the digestive tract, moving food through the different organs of digestion. Smooth muscle lining the blood vessels controls blood flow by increasing or decreasing the diameter of the blood vessel. The pupil of the eye dilates or contracts to let in light according to need, all due to the actions of the smooth muscle surrounding the pupil. Cardiac muscle is involuntary. It is only found in the heart; its contractions cause heart contractions to pump blood throughout the body.
