An open circulatory system is characteristic of arthropods and many mollusks. In an open circulatory system, blood does not move through closed blood vessels. Instead, the vessels carry blood to open sinuses where the tissues are directly bathed by the blood. Other sinuses then collect the blood to return it to the heart or hearts.
