Chapter 10, Cell Growth and Division - Assessment - 10.1 Cell Growth and Reproduction - Understand Key Concepts/Think Critically - Page 300: 3

Answer

b.

Work Step by Step

Only sexual reproduction introduces a combination of different genetic material in the daughter cells, which increases the genetic diversity of the population. Asexual reproduction means that the parent cell passes on the exact same genetic material to the daughter cells. There is no genetic diversity at all within this population of basically "clones." Binary fission is a form of asexual reproduction, so it also does not increase genetic diversity in a population. Cell division also produces two identical cells, so there is also no genetic diversity here.
