Chapter 57 - Dynamics of Ecosystems - Figure 57.12 - Inquiry Question - Page 1220: 1

Answer

Every trophic level from algae to humans has losses of energy due to entropy and other factors. This means that lots of calories in a low trophic level are needed to support few calories several levels higher.

Work Step by Step

Review the earlier material in the book about chemistry, energetics, and entropy. Every chemical reaction loses some energy to entropy, and there are an enormous number of reactions in even one trophic level.
