Chapter 5 - The Integumentary System - Review Questions - Page 171: 23

Answer

The body (of the nail) is the visibly attached portion of the nail, the root (of the nail) is embedded in the skin, the bed (of the nail) extends beneath the nail, the matrix (of the nail) is the thickened portion of the nail bed, and the eponychium is the folded projects on the nail body. The nail will more than likely not grow back due to the matrix being lost. Without the nails matrix, there’s nothing for a new nail to sprout from.
