If a solution is hypertonic to a cell, that solution has a higher concentration of solutes than the cell does. Substances diffuse down a concentration gradient, spreading out from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. Because the solutes in the solution cannot enter the cell, water in the cell diffuses out to counter this imbalance.
