Colon is a subdivision of large intestine. It contains ascending, transverse, descending and sigmoid portion. It is colonized by a huge number of bacteria that are responsible for producing vitamins. These bacteria also ferment indigestible carbohydrates and release gases (methane and nitrogen). In colon, most of the water and few electrolytes are reabsorbed (sodium and chloride). It is not the main site for absorption of nutrients like glucose and amino acids.
