Answer
Hyperventilation is condition in which the rate and depth of breathing exceeds what is necessary to remove normal levels of CO2 in the lungs.
Work Step by Step
An episode of hyperventilation my be triggered by emotional causes , for example , anxiety, extreme stress, or fear. Hemorrhaging, or infections can also cause hyperventilation. Athletes--swimmers and divers may also hyperventilate on purpose to "store up oxygen; this is an ineffective and dangerous practice.
Some of the early symptoms of hyperventilation are tingling, and spasms of muscles of face and hands Other symptoms include chest pain, weakness, dizziness, confusion and fainting. Most of the mental symptoms are due to ischemia and decreased brain perfusion as cerebral arteries constrict, secondary to increased blood pH, as CO2 is blown off.
