Histologically, spleen consists of two components, red pulp and white pulp.
White pulp is the immunologically active part of the spleen composed of lymphocytes suspended on reticular fibers.
Red pulp is the hemtologically active part of the spleen containing large number of erythrocytes and macrophages. It is the site where worn our red blood cells and blood borne pathogens are destroyed. It also contains splenic cords and venous sinuses (blood filled cavities).
