Chapter 2 - Chemistry Comes Alive - Review Questions - Page 59: 16

(e) all of these

Work Step by Step

Water's polarity makes it an excellent solvent, and the ability of water to dissolve substances is crucial for countless chemical reactions which take place in the body. Water's high heat capacity makes it resistant to temperature change, which in turn makes our bodies more resistant to temperature change because so much of our bodies are composed of water. The high heat of vaporization of water allows us to cool our bodies with sweat, which absorbs heat from both our bodies and our surroundings as it vaporizes. Water is also a crucial reactant in many chemical reactions within the body, as hydrolysis reactions (splitting a molecule by adding water) and dehydration synthesis reactions (combining two molecules by removing a water) are constantly occurring within the body. Therefore, all the listed answers are correct.
