Chapter 19 - The Cardiovascular System: Blood Vessels - Review Questions - Page 749: 18b

Answer

Currently normal blood pressure for an adult in the United States is 120/80.mm Hg This should be read as systolic pressure 120 mm Hg and diastolic pressure 80 mm Hg. This value was changed from the former value of 140/90 mm Hg . This latter standard was abandoned in November 2017.

Work Step by Step

The American Heart Association (AHA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH)state the values for normal adult blood pressure slightly differently According to the NIH the normal adult blood pressure is 120/80 (mm Hg) According to the AMA normal adult blood pressure should be in a range less than 120/80 (mmHg). Blood pressure is considered elevated if the systolic value ranges between 120-129 mm Hg and the diastolic reading is less than 80 mm Hg. However, if systolic pressure ranges between 130- 139 mm Hg (or) the diastolic pressure ranges between 80-89 mm Hg,, this is considered evidence of first stage hypertension and medical treatment is advised.
