Answer

Declarative and procedural memory memories are two forms of long term memory: Declarative memory is the memory for facts--names, faces words, dates. It is also called explicit memory and is formed with conscious thought. Formation of declarative memories requires a facility with language and an ability to manipulate symbols. Unlike non-declarative memory, declarative memory is situational; it is always stored with the context or situation in which it was learned. Procedural memory is memory for skills. It is formed without full conscious attention and is not stored with context or situation. It is a form of non-declarative memory like motor memory and emotional memory. Skills or procedural memories include skills like playing the piano or keyboarding. Once learned these procedural memories are very hard if not impossible to forget completely.

Work Step by Step

Examples of declarative memory : the name of your first grade teacher, the date of the Challenger disaster, your birthday, the face of the president, the Spanish word for "water". Procedural or skills memory is a form of non-declarative memory. This is often called implicit memory. Non-clarative memories may be acquired without full conscious attention . They are not stored in long term memory with their contexts. Some examples of procedural memories; how to ride a bicycle, how to swim, how to play the piano. how to drive a car , how to touch type. A distinction is sometimes made between procedural memories and motor memories. Remembering how to ride a bicycle, for instance, is sometime classified as a motor memory-- as different from a skills memory like remembering how to play the the piano. However, both motor memories and skill memories come under the umbrella term of non-declarative memories. Once formed non-declarative memories are much harder to forget than declarative memories
