Chapter 13 - The Respiratory System - Review Questions - Page 488: 22

Answer

The respiration rate and depth is affected by the concentration of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the blood. Generally the concentration of carbon dioxide is more important.

Work Step by Step

High concentration of carbon dioxide causes the pH of the blood to drop which is detected by the medulla and it increases the rate and depth of breathing. Low oxygen level are not very significant for the rate of respiration until the oxygen lever becomes very low.
