With their horse Prince dead and burried and the family's prospects looking pretty dim, Joan Durbeyfield has an idea. Tess will go to the d'Urbervilles at Trantridge to claim kinship and seek help. Tess does not dispute the plan–intimidating as it seems–because it was she who caused the death of Prince.
