I suppose this is open for debate. Alec's rape of Tess changed her forever. If Angel had accepted Tess's painful past he could have literally saved her. Angel didn't and to a larger degree ruined Tess more than Alec. She had just married the sap when, in a poignant moment of truth, she is sent packing. Alec was a creep who exerted power over Tess; Angel destroyed her soul.
