Striver is supposed to be the man in charge, the "lion," obviously placing him above Carton, who is known as the Jackal. Both men are drunks, but Carton seems to function better this way. Carton is the reason for Stryver's legal success. He seems to have. A disdain for Stryver as he will not indulge in a drink to the " golden-haired doll," Lucien, who he has become infatuated with.
