With this is laughed so laud that the lord grieved;

the blood for sheer shame shot to his face, and pride

with rage his face flushed red,

and so did all beside .then the King as bold men bred

toward the stranger took a stride.

King Arthur was pretty ashamed that nobody was taking the Green Knight up on his challenge. Arthur takes the axe to accept the challenge but Sir Gawain intervenes to take it instead. This shows Arthur to be brave and prideful of his character as well as his knights.
