Siddhartha

What is his explanation of having needed to go through his time in the city before he could really love the world?

Comes from the Chapter "Govinda"

I think this is because the city offers temptations that Siddhartha must not only learn to resist but learn to conquer. He must not feel these temptations anymore. Only then can he truly love for its own sake.
