If miss Emily were a male character, say 'Mr Emil' how would the story be different? How would it be different is she were poor?

A man would simply considered a bachelor rather than a spinster. He would still command power, if he has money, and respectability. Being poor might lose him the power but he could retain a much greater "worth" or respectability a woman like Emily was afforded.
