Shooting an Elephant

Orwell tell us repeatedly that his sympathies are with the Burmese. Yet he describes them as "evil spirited little beasts" (para. 2). Explain this ambivalence

I think Orwell always feels disconnected with the native population. He does not think the British should be there yet he feels isolated and estranged from them because he is British. The native population would not have wanted him there.
